Dr. Liao has 25 years of collaborative research experience involving the application of epidemiological approaches to investigate the progression and etiology of cardiovascular disease, with a focus on cardiopulmonary effects of environmental pollution, sleep disorders, and metabolic syndrome. Dr. Liao successfully applied for funding from NIH to initiate a population-based study of cardiac autonomic modulation. This study became the largest population based prospective study of this subject in the USA. Dr. Liao took responsibility for all aspects of the study and was among the first investigators to study cardiac autonomic control in the development of cardiovascular disease in population-based studies. Dr. Liao intimately involved in the EPA-sponsored Baltimore Elderly Epidemiology-Exposure, one of the first investigators to hypothesize and report the associations between air pollution and cardiac electrophysiological parameters as one of the mechanisms responsible for the link between air pollution and cardiac disease risk. Dr. Liao is the leading investigator to develop, validate, and apply the GIS-based daily kriging approaches for the Environmental Epidemiology of Arrhythmogenesis in Women Health Initiatives (EEAWHI) study. In recent years, Dr. Liao successfully developed collaborative studies in sleep related health studies. In these sleep-related studies, being able to develop the framework and the link between sleep-related disorders and cardiac and metabolic risks. For instance, we have successfully obtained NIH grants to support the investigation of the cardiac autonomic modulation effects of sleep related disorders, the Sleep-disordered Breathing, Sleep Stages & Heart Rate Variability in Children (R21), and the Sleep and Cardio-metabolic Risk Factors: a Prospective Study of Adolescents (R01), in which Dr. Liao served as PI or MPI. On the collaborative research, Dr. Liao is an active member of the NIH-funded Penn State CTSI Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Research Design (BERD) team. He is actively involved in a recently funded multicenter randomized clinical trial (U01) entitled “Study of Antimalarial in Incomplete Lupus Erythematosus (SMILE)”. Dr. Liao has published over 140 peer-reviewed research manuscripts in various scientific journals.

廖端平博士，宾州州立大学医学院终身教授，流行病学主任，公共卫生科学系主管科研的副主任。同济医学院78级儿科系毕业，83级硕士研究生，北卡大学流行病博士毕业。他在九十年代初首先提出并发现空气污染导致心血管疾病的机制之一是空气污染导致植物神经对心脏调控失去平衡。廖教授过去25年一直从事流行病学的研究，主要涉及心血管疾病的病因，病程进展，与环境污染，睡眠紊乱和代谢综合症之间的关系。是多项NIH资助的主管科学家(PI), 现代人群流行病学心血管疾病与自主神经调控的创史科学家。发表的学术论文140篇之多，培养7名博士后和10多名年轻助理教授。
